The Patriot Guardens Urban Farm in Dunbar, WV, offers veterans a place to reconnect with purpose through hands-on agricultural training. Whether you’re looking for a new career path, a therapeutic outlet, or a way to serve your community through local food production, the Urban Farm provides the skills and support to help you succeed.
At the heart of the farm is a focus on real-world experience. Veterans receive training in hydroponics, as well as field-grown vegetables, herbs, and small fruits, with a strong emphasis on growing produce for local restaurants and markets. From planting to post-harvest handling and direct sales, participants gain insight into every stage of the food production process.
Patriot Guardens re-established its Dunbar farm in 2022 by leasing space from KISRA. After several months of site cleanup and infrastructure improvements, production began in 2023 with the installation of 24 raised beds and greenhouse space. The first crops—including peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, green beans, zucchini, and squash—were sold at the on-base farmers market and to local restaurants, helping to create market access for active military and veteran growers.

Today, the 30,000-square-foot facility offers workforce development opportunities through collaborations with programs like Jobs & Hope WV. Veterans learn valuable skills in small engine and lawn equipment maintenance, irrigation, poultry care, and more. The farm also provides training on backyard chicken management, including WVDA permitting for egg sales.
